CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

Hi, I'm Andrew.
A Creative Director with over 25 years
of skin in the creative strategy game.
I would like to start by telling you a story. After all, isn't that what creative direction is all about?
...or is there more to it?
I'm certain by now, you have seen countless creative director portfolio sites that demonstrate some of the best work each candidate has developed over their careers.
You have seen logo designs, color palette executions that seamlessly blend with iconography, typography selection demonstrating all the letters of the alphabet and how it's applied to each execution, and so on, and so on, and so on.
You have also seen the application of this work in different settings like websites, mobile apps, wire frame renditions, packaging, OOH depictions, trade show executions, 3D modeling of beautiful looking designs, video clips and more.
In many of those portfolios you are briefed on what the initial goal was, the problem to solve, the goal each company is tying to achieve. And in almost every brief, they jump straight into the depiction of how they solved these problems visually.
IF YOU'RE STILL WITH ME...
DOES THIS LOOK ALL TOO FAMILIAR TO YOU?
So, ask yourself this question. Is this a demonstration of "creative strategy," or just graphic design dressed up as the "strategy" part?
Design execution is not strategy, it is only one piece of the puzzle that makes up the entirety of the whole picture. The design is what you get from a Graphic Designer. A Creative Director brings so much more to the table.
An analogy I love to use that simplifies the difference between the two is this:
In a chefs kitchen...
The Graphic Designer is the one cooking the food on the menu.
The Creative Director is the one who carefully prepares the menu, orchestrates the workflow of the kitchen, and tastes the food before each plate makes it to the customer eagerly waiting to experience a variety of flavors they are hoping will delight their palettes.
SURE. I CAN SHOW YOU A MULTITUDE OF IMAGES THAT DEMONSTRATES ALL MY BEST WORK.
But what would that tell you about me?
Am I a great graphic designer or better at creative strategy?
Let's get some of that out of the way now so we can continue to focus on the leadership aspect of being a creative director.

NOW THAT WE GOT THAT OUT OF THE WAY, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THAT MY MOUSE CLICKING SKILLS ARE NEXT LEVEL WHEN IT COMES TO GRAPHIC DESIGN.
NOW LETS GET TO THE MEAT AND POTATOES OF THIS STORY.
CREATIVE DIRECTION
VISION
My ability to see the big picture & knowing how to execute it with clarity.
Creative vision is the guiding perspective behind how a brand expresses itself visually, emotionally, and strategically. It defines the overall identity, mood, message, and experience a company wants their consumers to associate with its products.
Every brand in every industry has its own story to tell, with their own unique niche that sets them apart from their competitors. A creative leader worth their salt needs to able to distill complex business objectives, audience insights, and market opportunities into a singular, focused direction that capitalizes on those key differences. This clarity becomes the guiding principle for every creative decision that follows.
Equally important is emotional intelligence. It is critical to exceptional creative vision. It is rooted in understanding human behavior, emotion, aspiration, and perception. Strong creative vision anticipates what will resonate with an audience before the audience fully realizes it themselves. It creates emotional connection rather than simply visual appeal.
STRATEGY
Changing the way the world thinks about creative execution.
Creative strategy is the process of turning business goals into meaningful ideas that emotionally connect with people and drive action. It is the bridge between what a company wants to achieve and how creativity is used to achieve it.
Graphic design makes things look good.
Creative strategy makes things work.
A designer may create a beautiful advertisement but,
A creative strategist determines:
-
who the audience is
-
what emotional trigger matters to them
-
what message will influence them,
-
where they will see it
-
how it supports the brand
-
how it ultimately drives business growth
At its core, creative strategy is problem solving through creativity with a business objective attached to it.
The best creative strategies are simple, focused, and emotionally clear.
MY CREATIVE PROCESS

SERVICES
Deliver exceptional products and services through creative strategy.
One of the most critical elements of modern creative strategy is mapping every stage of the project lifecycle with clarity, agility, and purpose. Today’s creative brief is no longer just a document, it is a dynamic roadmap that aligns brand objectives, audience insights, messaging, channels, timelines, deliverables, and performance metrics from the start. By defining each phase of the process and creating space for collaboration, iteration, and real-time optimization, teams can move faster, work smarter, and focus their energy where it drives the greatest impact. When strategy is built for today’s evolving landscape, creativity becomes more adaptive, measurable, and powerful.

PRESENCE
Maximizing your brand footprint through an omni-channel deployment.
An omni-cannel strategy is critical as it ensures communication and sales channels are connected to create one seamless customer experience.
Doing this effectively requires impeccable timing and a consistent brand aesthetic and message.

LEADERSHIP
-
Who am I at my core?
-
What kind of leader am I?
-
How would I fit in with the culture of your team?
ALL GREAT QUESTIONS!
At my core, I'm laid back in the way I communicate with my peers but under that cool, relaxed guy persona that is easy to talk to, I am a famished problem solver always searching for the next big idea. Some may become uneasy when faced with problems but for me, I get excited. It pumps me up because I see it as an opportunity to test my grit. Solving problems is what keeps things interesting for me. Boredom is my true dislike because when things become boring, that means we are, or I am becoming to comfortable and not focusing on continuing growth and evolution.
WHAT IS MY LEADERSHIP STYLE?
The truth is, there is no one style I follow exclusively. I consider my style of leadership a combination of transformational, adaptive, servant and coaching.
I'm a visionary because I am always molding my ideas around the big picture that's tied to long term strategy and I am highly effective at connecting those ideas to people and processes. Parallel to that, I'm great at motivating my team to join me in achieving the big picture goals. This kind of motivation inspires innovative thinking that leads to growth and change.
I attribute my adaptive leadership style specifically to my affinity for solving problems. This makes me agile, highly flexible and resilient especially with crisis management.
The final two, servant and coaching leadership is directly connected to my personality. While we all have a job to do, we are working together to achieve the same goal. A successful company is the product of a successful team that communicates and works together seamlessly. I have a great deal of empathy for people. I love to listen and really get a sense for those I work with on an individual level. This kind of understanding gives me the ability to help my team reach their highest potential both professionally and in some cases personally. I foster a collaborative work place with an open door policy for anyone that wants to chat or bounce ideas off of one another. The camaraderie this creates is inspiring to all that are a part of the team. Coaching goes hand in hand with servant because it takes a deep level of understanding for each team member in order to help them continually develop new skills, grow within their role and ultimately thrive within the company.

JAMES EGITTO
SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER
SIGNATURE BRANDS, LLC
"I created the best artwork of my career under Andrew's leadership. He really encouraged me to push the envelope with innovation and trusted in my talent and experience. Whenever one of us was personally struggling with anything, he went out of his way to make sure we received the support we needed. He pulled right along with us at those times, regardless of who held which title, and never asked any of us to do anything he wouldn't do himself. Andrew set the expectation that we could all count on each other, and just knowing that was a real comfort to me at times of personal hardship."
